NSF Tokyo Regional Office

The National Science Foundation (NSF) is a United States government agency responsible for promoting basic research and education in science and engineering.  International activities are supported throughout the NSF portfolio. The Foundation's Office of International Science and Engineering (OISE) has a leadership role in promoting and coordinating international cooperation, and manages NSFfs overseas offices in Paris, Tokyo, and Beijing.

The NSF Tokyo Regional Office is located within the American Embassy in Tokyo and facilitates NSF activities principally in Japan, but also in other countries in the East Asia and Pacific region (except China) as needed.  The NSF Tokyo Regional Office has three major roles:

  • Facilitation: Promote collaboration between the science and engineering communities of the United States and the East Asia and Pacific region.

  • Representation: Serve as a liaison between NSF and agencies, institutions and researchers in the East Asia and Pacific region.

  • Reporting: Monitor and report on science and engineering developments and policies in the East Asia and Pacific region.

The NSF Tokyo Regional Office does not review proposals or administer awards.  For funding opportunities, go to the NSF homepage.  For country-specific funding questions, see NSF's Office of International Science and Engineering Staff by Country.
