EAPSI 2008 Japan (JSPS Summer Program) Closing

The EAPSI 2008 closing ceremony was held at Keio Plaza Hotel in Tokyo on August 20. 6 students including 2 US students gave a research report presentation and the program closed with great success.

EAPSI 2008 Japan (JSPS Summer Program)

The opening ceremony for the 19th Summer Institute was held at SOKENDAI (The Graduate University for Advanced Studies) in Hayama on June 18, 2008 for 114 graduate students from US, UK, France, Germany and Canada. There are 63 participants from US this year. They will gain research experience at Japanese host research institutions through August 20, 2008.

NSF Director, Dr. Arden Bement, Jr., visits Kyoto and Tokyo

Dr. Bement attended the meeting of the Heads of Research Councils (HORCs) of the G8 Countries held in Kyoto on May 17-19. The HORCs was organized and hosted by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS). @In addition to the traditional principals only sessions, the HORCs agenda included a lecture by Dr. Shinya Yamanaka on induced pluripotent stem cell research and a tour of the Katsura Campus of KyotoUniversity. On May 20 in Tokyo, Dr Bement met Minister Kisaburo Tokai of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, and Mr. Fumio Kishida, Minister of State for Science and Technology. He also gave a speech on climate change science at the Tokyo American Center to a standing room only audience. On May 21, Dr. Bement traveled to the campus of Tokyo Institute of Technology (TIT) and met with 16 undergraduate students participating in the NanoJapan program sponsored by a NSF PIRE (Partnerships for International Research and Education) award, 0530220. Meeting with the TIT President Iga concluded his busy schedule. |

NSF Tokyo Regional Office

The National Science Foundation (NSF) is a United States government agency responsible for promoting basic research and education in science and engineering. International activities are supported throughout the NSF portfolio. The Foundation's Office of International Science and Engineering (OISE) has a leadership role in promoting and coordinating international cooperation, and manages NSFfs overseas offices in Paris, Tokyo, and Beijing.
The NSF Tokyo Regional Office is located within the American Embassy in Tokyo and facilitates NSF activities principally in Japan, but also in other countries in the East Asia and Pacific region (except China) as needed. The NSF Tokyo Regional Office has three major roles:

Facilitation: Promote collaboration between the science and engineering communities of the United States and the East Asia and Pacific region.

Representation: Serve as a liaison between NSF and agencies, institutions and researchers in the East Asia and Pacific region.

Reporting: Monitor and report on science and engineering developments and policies in the East Asia and Pacific region.
