The National
Science Foundation's Tokyo Regional Office periodically reports on developments
in Japan that are related to the Foundation's mission. It also provides
occasional re-ports on developments in other East Asian countries. These reports
are intended to provide information for the use of NSF program officers and
policy makers; they are not statements of NSF policy.
The Science and Technology Agency of Japan (STA) has compiled budget requests for JFY2001 from ministries and agencies for genomic research. The requested total budget amount in this field is Yen 94,659 million (ca. US$902 million), a 57% increase from the budget of Yen 60,286 million (ca. $574 million) in JFY2000.
This large increase reflects the Japanese government's efforts to catch up with western countries in post-genomic research. In fact, the Prime Minister's Council for Science and Technology (CST) established a "Panel for Discussing Strategies in Promoting Post-genomic Research" in September 2000. The Panel will discuss the strategies until the end of the calendar year 2000.
The breakdown of the requested budget is shown in the table below. The figures that appear in bold are those requested under the "special framework for reviving the Japanese economy." (see NSF Tokyo Report Memorandum #00-15 at http://www.twics.com/~nsftokyo/rm00-15).
The projects in which large amounts will be invested are:
. RIKEN's Genomic Sciences Center (Yen 16 billion), one of the three research centers established in RIKEN's Yokohama Institute
. Basic research on protein sciences (Yen Yen 5.5 billion) under the Medical Frontier Strategy project that will be promoted by the Ministry of Health and Welfare (MHW), mainly at the National Cancer Center Research Institute
. A Protein Library (Yen 5 billion) and Bioinformatics Technologies (Yen 5 billion) to be promoted by METI (Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry)
. Center for Advanced Genome Information (Yen 4.5 billion) to be invested within the Japan Science and Technology Corporation (JST)
. Research on immunity/allergy (Yen 3.6 billion) to be invested at the new Comprehensive Research Center at RIKEN's Life Science Laboratory in Tsukuba
. Large-volume high-speed structural analyses of protein (Yen 3 billion) at the SPring-8 site
. Rice Genome Simulator project (Yen 2.5 billion) to be promoted at the National Institute of Agrobiological Resources under the Ministry of Agriculture, Forest and Fisheries (MAFF).
