S&T-related Budget Requests for JFY2003

On September 26, 2002, MEXT (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) made public the quick summary of the Science and Technology-related budget request for JFY 2003 (Japanese Fiscal Year: April 1, 2003-March 2004), compiling the S&T-related budget requests by all the ministries and agencies in Japan. The total amount of Science and Technology-related budget requests was Yen 3,953.8 Billion (ca. $32.94 Billion), an increase from the previous year by 11.7 percent.
The above figures are quick compilation of the requested budgets before coordination and adjustment. The requested projects for JFY2003 will be reviewed by the Council for Science and Technology Policy (CSTP) to be ranked by the end of October. The rating will then be forwarded to the Ministry of Finance who will make the final decision based on the ranking by the end of December 2002. This office will report the final figures when they are announced. Also, this office will report the budgets by field in December 2002.
The following tables show a quick summary of the S&T-related budgets by nature of budget for JFY2002 and JFY2003, followed by a quick summary of the S&T-related budgets by ministry/agency for JFY2003 and JFY2002. For the reason cited above, the figures may change.
