NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION
TOKYO REGIONAL OFFICE

February 20, 2004

The National Science Foundation's Tokyo Regional Office periodically reports on developments in Japan that are related to the Foundation's mission.  It also provides occasional reports on developments in other East Asian countries.

Tokyo Office Report Memoranda are intended to provide information for the use of NSF program officers and policy makers; they are not statements of NSF policy.

Report Memorandum #04-03

The following workshop attendance report was prepared by Ms. Kazuko Shinohara of the National Science Foundation’s Tokyo Regional Office.  She can be reached at kshinoha@nsf.gov

JFY2004 S&T-related Budgets BY PROJECT

This is to follow up the CSTP’s (Council for Science and Technology Policy) rating (http://www.nsftokyo.org/rm03-10.html) on Science and Technology-related budgets for JFY 2004. Based on the CSTP’s rating and responses from the ministries/agencies, the Ministry of Finance made the final decision on the JFY2004 budgets at the end of December 2003. The quick summary for S&T-related budgets for JFY2004 was reported on http://www.nsftokyo.org/rm04-02.html This is to report the S&T-related budgets for JFY2004 by project.

The budgets for the projects rated S, A, B, and C in JFY2004 have increased from those for JFY2003 as follows:

S: +16.7%
A: +5.9%
B: -2.8%
C: -20.8%

These increase rates show that the rating made by CSTP was reflected on the Ministry of Finance’s final decision.
